Are you thinking of running for municipal office?

The next regular municipal and school board trustee election will be held on Monday, October 24, 2022 for the following offices:

  • Mayor

  • Ward Councillor (six wards)

  • York Region District School Board Trustee

  • York Catholic District School Board Trustee

  • Conseil scolaire Viamonde Trustee

  • Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir Trustee

Filing Nominations

Nominations can be filed from May 2, 2022 to August 18, 2022 during regular business hours (Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), and on Nomination Day, August 19, 2022, from 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at the Municipal Offices, 111 Sandiford Drive, Stouffville.

Please book an appointment with the Clerks Division to file your nomination at elections@townofws.ca.

To file your nomination, you must provide:

  1. Form 1 Nomination Paper
  2. Form 2 Endorsement of Nomination with a minimum of 25 signed declarations 
  3. Proof of identity with qualifying address
  4. Nomination filing fee: $200 for Mayor, $100 for Councillor

Original signatures are required for all forms filed with the Clerks Division. Agents who file on behalf of a candidate must provide all of the above, and their own identification.

Candidates are also subject to a municipal election sign fee of $267.

No person who proposes to be a candidate may solicit or accept contributions for election purposes or incur campaign expenses until a nomination paper has been filed.

School Board Trustee

Nomination forms for York Region District School Board Trustee and York Catholic District School Board Trustee must be filed with the Clerk of the Town of Aurora

York Region District School Board Trustee Electoral Area: Aurora and Whitchurch-Stouffville 

York Catholic District School Board Trustee Electoral Area: Aurora, King, and Whitchurch-Stouffville

A person is qualified to be elected or hold office as a member of Council only if, as of the day they file their nomination the person:
  • Is a Canadian citizen;
  • Is at least 18 years of age;
  • Resides in the Town, or is the owner or tenant of land in Town, or the spouse of such a person; and
  • Is not prohibited from voting in a municipal election under any law.

The following people are disqualified from being elected to office on Whitchurch-Stouffville Council:

  • Any person who is not eligible to vote in the Town;
  • An employee of the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville who has not taken an unpaid leave of absence and resigned;
  • A judge of any court;
  • An MP, an MPP, or a senator;
  • An inmate serving a sentence in a penal or correctional institution; and
  • A candidate who failed to file the necessary financial statement or exceeded the prescribed spending limit(s) in the last municipal election.

A person is qualified to be elected or hold an office as a School Board Trustee with the York Region District School Board (YRDSB), York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB), Conseil scolaire Viamonde, or Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir, only if, as of the day they file their nomination the person:

  • Is a Canadian citizen;
  • Is at least 18 years of age or older;
  • Resides within the school board's area of jurisdiction; 
  • Is qualified to vote for members of that school board (a supporter of that school board); and
  • Not otherwise disqualified from holding office on a school board under any law.

The following people are disqualified from being elected as a school board trustee:

  • Any person who is not eligible to vote in the school board election;
  • An employee of a school board or a municipal official who has not taken an unpaid leave of absence and resigned;
  • A judge of any court;
  • An MP, an MPP, or a senator; 
  • An inmate serving a sentence in a penal or correctional institution; and
  • A candidate who failed to file the necessary financial statement or exceeded the prescribed spending limit(s) in the last school board election.
